Ceramic Village Tiles video art lesson plan for potter's clay suits grades 4-6. It demonstrates hand-building skills and supports students to achieve the elements of 3D FORM & TEXTURE in their sculptures. A perfect companion to a theme study of houses around the world, migration, community, a sense of place (whakapapa-NZ) or to create collaborative art for exhibitions. Can also support literacy or book study units.
Use with upper elementary and middle school learners in a series of consecutive lessons. Encourage students choice options to create their unique version of a village tile.
This lesson plan focuses on:
- Basic hand skills - making slabs, spheres, 3D shapes like cones and prisms, pinch-pots
- Hand building - using joining techniques: scratch, wet, wiggle, scrape and smooth
- Adding details with tools - windows, doors, cladding, roofing, water and land textures
- Using underglaze to colour - use colour with purpose, application of underglaze, colour layering
- Glaze finish - adding that final touch for a shiny, smooth finish
