A great unit for cultural studies. This unit explores observational drawing, repetitive graphic patterning, sponge paintwork, some 3D construction with cardboard and string, collage. This PDF resource will provide a term's worth of learning as follows:


1) Develop Practical Knowledge in the Visual Arts (P.K) - Develop my observational drawing skills and Explore the use of mixed media

2) Develop Ideas in the Visual Arts (DI) - Contrast complimentary colours for effect

3) Communicate and Interpret the Visual Arts (C.I) - Share my choice of pattern and carving design

4) Understand the Visual Arts in Context (U.C) - Discuss the meaning of patterns and carving designs in Maori culture


Lessons are step-by-step and easy to follow. Contains lesson sequence, unit plan, self assessment, teacher assessment. Full colour and brimming with progressphotographs. Students will create a final piece of work showing a cultural panel using traditional Maori kowhaiwhai patterns and pendant carvings for reference. Examples in this unit were made by Y4-6 students.
