COLOUR THEORY ACHROMATIC Art Lesson for Nocturnal animals
How to draw nocturnal animals like an OWL, TIGER and MOTH using an achromatic colour scheme. This is a PDF product, in landscape format, that demonstrates all drawing steps with instructions, drawing guides and photographs. Used with students in Years 4-8, grades 3-7, ages 9-12.

This lesson plan focuses on the Art Elements of:
- COLOUR - using achromatic schemes
- SHAPE - use shapes to compose drawings
- SPACE - foreground, middle ground and background
- TEXTURE - add marks to show fur or feathers
Use this lesson to support & extend learning for students in a Science topics focused on animals (Sharing the Planet), or use as a response with a Literature study.
Share the lesson through a large screen for your child or students to follow along, pausing in places for them to complete the steps at their own pace. With more able students, use this lesson as a preliminary teaching tool before students move into self directed expression. This method can also offer time for opportunities to explore student responses or modifications, bringing personal creative ideas to the tutorial. Addresses the Viewing & Responding to artwork concepts.
Suits: most mid primary and upper elementary grades, homeschooling families.
Children will: have the choice of creating an achromatic drawings of an owl, tiger or math, or all three, with easily available art materials.
Learning intentions include: Draw from observations, Draw with tutorials, Compose drawings with shapes, Layer elements to create depth, Show texture for feathers and fur, Colouring with accuracy, Respond to art created by artists and by my friends, Reflect on my own artwork, skills and progress.

Materials used: A4* art paper, drawing pencil, black markers,
*A4 = 8.5 by 11 inches (215.9 by 279.4 mm)
