Thank you for viewing this product. Suitable for primary / elementary and middle school. This is not a print and go unit - it is so much more!

This quality teacher guide with over 55 pages, can help you to confidently deliver your Recount writing plan over multiple lessons, through a context that you and your students will love.

Based on engaging student choice opportunities for genuine student agency in the writing process and student voice in the work product.

The content can be adapted to suit elementary and middle school learners.

Use the time-honoured classic picture book by Judith Viorst called ‘Alexander and the terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad day,’ as the provocation for this Recount writing unit (links to a video read-along also included).

Students explore the concepts of resilience, bad things happen to everyone, bad feelings/pain will pass, how to seek comfort, dealing with disappointment and lessons learnt from difficult experiences.

Using the recount writing genre, students reflect on personal experiences in their past and bring them together to create their own recounts in a light-hearted way and with a unique twist.

The lesson covers:

recount purpose, type and structure

accurate vocabulary choices

sentence openers that hook readers

conjunctions beyond 'and'

time words that order events and go beyond 'then'

partner share and feedback

self reflection on achievement and future goal setting

exemplars and practise worksheets

wall posters

success criteria.

"My students loved the activity we did with this! (March 7, 2018, Jessica M.)"

"Great unit to get students thinking about an experience in their own lives with Alexander as a provocation. My students often struggle with coming up with their own writing ideas. (November 6, 2016, Brenna T)"
