Teach portrait art with more confidence using this step-by-step Jen Stark art lesson. Students create stunning Contemporary portraits while learning art history, pattern techniques, and the Elements of Art. Self Portraits are a great art project to start a new year. Ties in perfectly with first weeks of school themes like Who We Are and How We Express Ourselves. With this portrait art project, the focus is on exploring the principles of pattern, repetition and movement. Students will explore color/colour schemes, value selections and graphic patterns. Students can select to create a self portrait or one of an important role model in their lives. However many teachers avoid teaching portraits because they know students struggle with proportion and the lack of likeness that they may achieve, directly impacting their self esteem. Eliminate the frustration that portrait lessons can bring. Here is a quick and fun way to create self-portraits without the tears. Using photographs and the transfer method, students can achieve a strong likeness for their subject, and by focusing on the fun, bright designs of Jen Stark, the realism pressure is eliminated for both student and teacher.

This Contemporary Jen Stark Style Portrait lesson is a step-by-step multi-lesson guide that teaches students about using the elements of art like Line, Shape, Value, Texture & Space. Learn about Jen Stark, Contemporary Art, and using edited photographs to support your artwork. Students learn to use lines and shapes to compose patterns for the clothes and background of their portrait. Skin, hair and eyes are all created through the use of values. Students will also learn how to work with positive and negative space through layering. This fun visual art project suits mid elementary to middle school students, brightening up your classroom walls and school hallways. Students will enjoy making their personal version of this striking artwork, guided by the step-by-step instructions in this PDF slideshow.

❤️ So what is special about this resource?

CONTEMPORARY ART PORTRAITS (STARK), is NOT a superficial art or craft option. As a specialist in this field, I write lessons that encourage deeper, cross-curricular learning and make meaningful connections to other subject areas. This IS:

  • a drawing tutorial that includes the concepts of line, position, size, shape and pattern (Math),
  • supports the principles of repetition, pattern and movement
  • makes cross-curricular links to New Beginnings, Who We Are & How We Express Ourselves (IB).

Students can express their unique ideas through personal choices and modifications, while working through the guided project. Pause the PDF presentation in places to discuss next steps with students, check understanding and explore potential student responses or modifications, bringing personal creative ideas to the tutorial. This addresses the Viewing & Responding to artwork objectives in a purposeful way.
