Explore Valentine's Day Confetti Hearts Art Project using this Collage activity for a quick art lesson. This Visual Guide art project was created for early elementary to mid elementary students, to explore shapes, combined with layering collage techniques. Students will work with concepts based in the elements of art like line, shape and texture. For older students, this is a great skill review or a self-directed bonus activity at your independent mixed-media station, when you have early finishers.

For younger students, run as a teacher guided lesson to develop knowledge and skills with guided collage. The Visual Guide is inspired by the works of contemporary artists and Pop art. Created for students to explore composition with shapes and lines and basic colour (color) theory. Use painted paper, craft or wrapping paper remnants to create fun collage projects. A great budget friendly option for end of the term when you want to use up what you have in the classroom and as a Sub lesson for those unforeseen sick days.


The final product makes a great display for your classroom, hallways or art shows. A wonderful visual way to make learning connections with themes like kindness week, Back to School or Valentines Day. We connected ours to our Who We Are Unit of Inquiry in First Grade and exploring feelings, partnering with great picture books and read-alouds.

⏰ How long should I run an art station for? 

If you are an art teacher, then you can make that call based on your programme. For classroom teachers, I recommend that an art station stays open for at least a week, prior to starting a guided, whole class art project with that medium.

Then for another week after completing that project, so that early finishers can further experiment independently.

This short project will take 1-3 lessons depending on the paper size and media, age and skill level of your students.


❤️ Why should I run art centres (centers) in my classroom? Isn't that just for art teachers?

The short answer is NO.

We can no longer omit art explorations from our classrooms.

Art can make a powerful contribution to our students' mental health

In addition to helping students develop a number of important skills, free expression (like using art stations or art centers) is also good for overall health and well-being. Giving young children a creative outlet can help relieve stress and work through things happening in their lives. By encouraging artistic expression, you can help facilitate further learning and engagement.
