The first weeks of school are all about building healthy friendships, and understanding / respecting friendship boundaries. This guided drawing lesson will create a background of the beach, folded into a 3D diorama, and free-standing puppets of themself and a friend. A perfect back to school activity for First -Third grade teachers. This is the first in a highly engaging series of guided drawing resources that you can either use independently of each other or use the entire bundle and offer your students even more choice. Each drawing guide is based on a place where we like to play with our friends. These include:

  1. My house
  2. The beach
  3. The playground

This resource will guide you and your students to draw the beach playdate option and provide many places in the lesson sequence where student choice will add originality to each student's artwork. All the while keeping the skills taught consistent across the class, to save your sanity. Each guide also includes the instructions for students to create the 2 figures - themself and their friend.

Each art lesson in this series has been tested and crafted to suit this age group of 6 - 7yr olds.

⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ "I did this activity with K1 all the way to grade 7! Each class was enthralled with this. We eventually made a holiday one, and kids asked to do this again the next day! It was so fun! Any grade can do this! "

My art project guides are all in non-editable PDF presentation format, in landscape orientation to be screen friendly. The pacing guide demonstrates every step and includes bonus slides on:

  • Materials list
  • Information about forming healthy friendships
  • Inspiration photos
  • Step by step instructions and sequence photos of the process
  • Self assessment and reflection sheets

The landscape format makes it easy to share the modelled steps on a large screen, with your students.

❤️ So what is special about this resource?

Let's play at the beach - Friendship Art Project , is NOT a superficial art or craft option. As a former classroom teacher and now a Visual Art specialist educator, I write lessons that encourage deeper, cross-curricular learning and make meaningful connections to other subject areas. This IS:

  • a drawing tutorial that includes the concepts of line, shape, position, size and space (Math),
  • supports student agency through choice
  • makes cross-curricular links to Friendships, back to school, new beginnings, beach day and friend activities (Who We Are and How We Organise Ourselves - IB).

Students can express their unique ideas through personal choices and modifications, while working through the guided project. Pause the PDF presentation in places to discuss next steps with students, check understanding and explore potential student responses or modifications, bringing personal creative ideas to the tutorial. This addresses the Viewing & Responding to artwork objectives in a purposeful way.

❤️ Why should you trust my lessons?

I am a full-time Visual Art and Digital Media specialist educator, with years of experience teaching students from ages 4-12, at a primary school. I do this every day, just like you! My experience and knowledge are up to date with current practise and I love sharing my project learnings to support you in your practise.

❤️ How will this resource help busy teachers, who are nervous about teaching art?

No worries - I’ve got you covered.

This lesson comes as a full colour PDF teacher guide, with a bumper 50+ slide deck, to share on your large screen with your students.

All project steps are clearly explained and photographed, from start to finish, giving you the confidence to deliver quality visual art lessons for multi-day projects, to your students.

Use in a series of consecutive lessons. Encourage students to follow choice options along the way and create their unique artwork, while being guided by the information in the slideshow.

❤️ Take the guesswork out of teaching art, or prepping activities for subs

❤️ Avoid endless hours of research and resource creation

❤️ No more epic fails that result from not having the time to test lessons or media yourself before teaching a project

I’ve done it all for you in this comprehensive teaching guide, road-tested with my own students.

❤️ All the materials & skills are also clearly listed for you. It’s like having an art specialist with you in your classroom.

The PDF slides are intentionally designed in landscape orientation, to share with your students. This extra visual support will prove useful, particularly for young learners developing independence, and will also save you from having to repeat the same instructions, over and over again.

Select VIEW > enter full screen for presentation mode. Then use the arrow keys on your keyboard to drive a smooth slideshow experience, like a pro :)

No printing required

Encourage students along the way, to follow choice options and create their unique artwork, while being guided by the information on the slides.

⏰ How long will this project take to finish?

This art project can be completed in 3-6 lessons, depending on the age and skill of students and the size of paper /media/ style you or your students choose, and whether you run guided drawing lessons before starting the project.

Chunk into smaller manageable lessons, as needed.
