Cozy Bugs is a perfect art project for Early Elementary - First grade or Second grade students. A Drawing activity for a quick art lesson, to explore drawing little bugs with 3D form using values, combined with pattern design using line to decorate the leaf beds. Students will work with concepts based in the elements of art while also incorporating their own personal design ideas.

For younger students, run as a teacher guided lesson to develop knowledge and skills with guided drawing. Use either realistic or imaginative details and colours (colors).

A great option to have on hand for end of the term when you want to use up what you have in the classroom or to fill up extra lessons, and as a Sub lesson for those unforeseen sick days.

When my students saw me prototyping these cute bed bugs, they were so engaged that I needed to pivot my planned lessons, and switch to making these with them instead. They loved it!

Students build genuine art skills like drawing, cutting and gluing. They acquire knowledge about the Art element, while making an engaging and personal version of this artwork, guided by the detailed instructions in the PDF slideshow. Makes connections to Inquiry themes related to How We Express Ourselves (IB PYP).

Suits: 6-8 Year olds, in early elementary.

❤️ Take the guesswork out of teaching art,

❤️ Avoid endless hours of research,

❤️ No more epic fails that result from not having the time to test the lesson or medium yourself before teaching it.

I’ve done it all for you in this comprehensive multi-lesson teaching guide.

❤️ Why should you trust my lessons?

I am both a general ed. classroom teacher and currently practising as a Visual Art and Digital Media specialist educator, teaching students from ages 4-12, at a primary school. I do this every day, just like you! My experience and knowledge are up to date with current practise.

❤️ How will this resource help busy classroom teachers, who are nervous about teaching art?

No worries - I’ve got you covered.

This lesson comes as a full colour PDF teacher pacing guide, with a 45+ slide deck, to share on your large screen with your students.

All project steps are clearly explained and photographed, from start to finish, giving you the confidence to deliver a quality visual art lesson for quick, engaging projects, to your students.

❤️ So what is special about this resource?

‘COZY BUGS' - is NOT a superficial art or craft option. As a specialist in this field, I write lessons that encourage deeper, cross-curricular learning and make meaningful connections to other subject areas. This IS:

  • a drawing tutorial that uses the art elements
  • build sequencing skills
  • explores concepts of size, shapes, pattern, symmetry concepts and spacial awareness (Math)
  • builds fine motor skills in young learners
  • explores bug habitat concepts (Sharing the planet) and creative expression (How We Express Ourselves).

This lesson plan can be the perfect companion art project for students inquiring into:

✏️ Insects

✏️ Habitats

✏️ Developing and improving fine motor skills

✏️ Sharing the planet & How We Express Ourselves (IB PYP)

✏️ And a great extension activity for shared picture books.

Students can express their unique ideas through personal choices and modifications, while working through the guided project. Pause the instruction guide in places to discuss next steps with students, check understanding and explore potential student responses or modifications, bringing personal creative ideas to the tutorial. This addresses the Viewing & Responding to artwork objectives in a purposeful way.
