Coral Reef COLLAGE Art Project for Sea Week Mixed Media Lesson Plan + Earth Day
UNDER THE SEA is a perfect art project for Kindergarten, First grade or Second grade students, learning about Coral Reef Habitats in our sea and ocean environments. Save this art lesson for your Earth Day or Sea Week focus on your calendar. Consolidate inquiry learning with this multi-day, mixed-media collage art project. Highly engaging as young children have a natural love for the ocean and its creatures. This step-by-step tutorial makes authentic links to in-class inquiry based learning. Students will explore oil and water resist techniques to make painted papers, use mark making to add textures, cut shapes to build their coral reef and draw ocean animals like sharks, turtles, shells and fish, using observational drawing or tracing. Students build genuine art skills like drawing, painting, cutting and gluing.
Students will acquire knowledge about the Art element, while making an engaging and personal version of this artwork, guided by the detailed instructions in the PDF slideshow. Makes strong connections to Inquiry themes related to Sharing the Planet (IB PYP).
Suits: 5-7 Year olds, in early elementary.

❤️ So what is special about this resource?
‘UNDER THE SEA' - inspired by a popular inquiry theme in these early years - is NOT a superficial art or craft option. As a specialist in this field, I write lessons that encourage deeper, cross-curricular learning and make meaningful connections to other subject areas. This IS:
- a drawing, painting and collage tutorial that uses the art elements
- build sequencing skills
- explores concepts of size, shapes and spacial awareness (Math)
- builds fine motor skills in young learners
- explores ocean habitat concepts ( Sharing the planet).
This lesson plan can be the perfect companion art project for students inquiring into:
✏️ Seas & oceans
✏️ Coral Reefs
✏️ Habitats
✏️ Developing and improving fine motor skills
✏️ Sharing the planet (IB PYP)
✏️ And a great extension activity for shared picture books.
Students can express their unique ideas through personal choices and modifications, while working through the guided project. Pause the instruction guide in places to discuss next steps with students, check understanding and explore potential student responses or modifications, bringing personal creative ideas to the tutorial. This addresses the Viewing & Responding to artwork objectives in a purposeful way.
