Plants Life Cycles Collage Art Project a Mixed Media Lesson Plan for Earth Day
PLANT LIFE CYCLES is a perfect art project to fit with First grade or Second grade students, learning about plants and their life cycles. Consolidate inquiry learning with this mixed-media collage project. Highly engaging as young children have a natural love for flowers, this multi-lesson art tutorial makes authentic links to in-class learning. Students will explore oil and water resist techniques to make painted papers, use mark making to add textures, cut shapes to build their flowers and draw a figure using scale and proportion. Students build genuine art skills like drawing, painting, cutting and gluing.
Students will acquire knowledge about the Art element, while making an engaging and personal version of this artwork, guided by the instructions in the PDF slideshow. Makes strong connections to Earth Day and Inquiry themes related to Sharing the Planet & How The World Works (IB PYP).
Suits: 6-8 Year olds, in early elementary.

❤️ Take the guesswork out of teaching art,
❤️ Avoid endless hours of research,
❤️ No more epic fails that result from not having the time to test the lesson or medium yourself before teaching it.
I’ve done it all for you in this comprehensive multi-lesson teaching guide.
❤️ Why should you trust my lessons?
I am both a general ed. classroom teacher and currently practising as a Visual Art and Digital Media specialist educator, teaching students from ages 4-12, at a primary school. I do this every day, just like you! My experience and knowledge are up to date with current practise.
❤️ How will this resource help busy classroom teachers, who are nervous about teaching art?
No worries - I’ve got you covered.

❤️ So what is special about this resource?
‘PLANT LIFE-CYCLES' - inspired by a popular inquiry theme in these early years - is NOT a superficial art or craft option. As a specialist in this field, I write lessons that encourage deeper, cross-curricular learning and make meaningful connections to other subject areas. This IS:
- a drawing, painting and collage tutorial that uses the art elements
- build sequencing skills
- explores concepts of size, shapes and spacial awareness (Math)
- builds fine motor skills in young learners
- explores life cycle concepts (How the world works & Sharing the planet).
This lesson plan can be the perfect companion art project for students inquiring into:
✏️ Plants
✏️ Life Cycles
✏️ The concept of 'change'
✏️ Developing and improving fine motor skills
✏️ How the world works & Sharing the planet (IB PYP)
✏️ And a great extension activity for shared picture books.
Students can express their unique ideas through personal choices and modifications, while working through the guided project. Pause the instruction guide in places to discuss next steps with students, check understanding and explore potential student responses or modifications, bringing personal creative ideas to the tutorial. This addresses the Viewing & Responding to artwork objectives in a purposeful way.
