KOI PONDS is a perfect mixed media sculpture project for upper elementary or middle school art students. This art project including media like papier-mâché, paint and oil pastels. Based on the Koi Ponds developed in the East, that inspired artists like Claude Monet in his garden planning and waterlily series of paintings. This project also uses recycled materials like packaging cardboard and packing boxes from laptops, shoes, etc. A comprehensive, multi-lesson art sculpture that connects with themes like Earth Day and caring for our planet. Alternatively the topic of koi fish connects with farming themes and cultural exports from East to West.

A highly engaging project with several elements that are created across multiple consecutive lessons and includes opportunity for student choice and personalisation.

Students will explore armature making and papier-mâché sculpture, oil pastel blending, and layering paint values to create depth. Combined with using color (colour) schemes with purpose and building genuine art skills like drawing, painting, cutting and gluing.

Students will be exposed to knowledge about the Art element, while these instructions will guides you and your students through making an engaging and personal version of this artwork, guided by the instructions in the PDF slideshow. Makes strong connections to Inquiry themes related to Sharing the Planet (IB PYP).

Suits: 10+ Year olds and middle school

❤️ Take the guesswork out of teaching art,

❤️ Avoid endless hours of research,

❤️ No more epic fails that result from not having the time to test the lesson or medium yourself before teaching it.

I’ve done it all for you in this comprehensive multi-lesson teaching guide.

❤️ Why should you trust my lessons?

I am both a general ed. classroom teacher and currently practising as a Visual Art and Digital Media specialist educator, teaching students from ages 4-12, at a primary school. I do this every day, just like you! My experience and knowledge are up to date with current practise.

❤️ How will this resource help busy classroom teachers, who are nervous about teaching art?

No worries - I’ve got you covered.

This lesson comes as a full colour PDF teacher guide, with a 70+ slide deck, to share on your large screen with your students.

All project steps are clearly explained and photographed, from start to finish, giving you the confidence to deliver quality visual art lessons for multi-day projects, to your students.

Why exhaust yourself teaching 1 day lessons. Save those for your early finishers and make the shift to comprehensive, quality learning practise.

Use in a series of consecutive lessons, while encouraging students to follow choice options along the way and create their unique artwork, and be guided through their learning by the information in the slideshow.

❤️ All the materials & skills are also clearly listed for you. It’s like having an art specialist with you in your classroom.

The PDF slides are  intentionally designed in landscape orientation, to share with your students. This extra visual support will prove useful, particularly for young learners, and will also save you from having to repeat the same instructions, over and over again.

❤️ So what is special about this resource?

‘Koi Ponds' - inspired by the Japanese activity of cultivating koi fish, a hobby that has spread across to the west and was embraced by renown artists like Monet and Matisse - is NOT a superficial art or craft option. As a specialist in this field, I write lessons that encourage deeper, cross-curricular learning and make meaningful connections to other subject areas. This IS:

  • a mixed media tutorial that uses the art elements
  • explore recycling packaging
  • build sequencing skills
  • explores concepts of size, shapes and space (Math)
  • strengthens fine motor skills in young learners
  • explores habitats relationships (Sharing the planet).

This lesson plan can be the perfect companion art project for students inquiring into:

✏️ The art elements.

✏️ Farming, hobbies, habitats or fish

✏️ Developing and improving fine motor skills

✏️ Sharing the planet (IB PYP)

✏️ And a great art history activity.

Students can express their unique ideas through personal choices and modifications, while working through the guided project. Pause the instruction guide in places to discuss next steps with students, check understanding and explore potential student responses or modifications, bringing personal creative ideas to the tutorial. This addresses the Viewing & Responding to artwork objectives in a purposeful way.
