Dotted Heart Plant Still Life Painting Art Project, Yayoi Kusama inspired lesson
Spring, Summer and Plants are always popular themes for Visual Art projects in elementary schools. DOTTED PLANTS STILL LIFE is a step-by-step multi-lesson guide that teaches students about using the elements of art like Line, Shape and Form. Exploring the work of contemporary artist, Yayoi Kusama, students learn to use line and shape patterns to create visual texture in their paintings. Combining Paint sticks and acrylic paints with art pencils creates these striking still life paintings. The teacher model is based on the Anthurium house plant with glossy heart shaped leaves. This make the project a lovely alternative to heart art during February.
Students in mid elementary will enjoy making their personal version of this striking artwork, guided by the instructions in the PDF slideshow. Make strong connections to Inquiry themes related to plants, still life and art history. IB themes like Who We Are and Sharing the Planet.
✅ Suitable for Mid Elementary students in 3rd - 5th grades.

❤️ So what is special about this resource?
DOTTED HEART PLANT is NOT a superficial art or craft option. As a specialist in this field, I write lessons that encourage deeper, cross-curricular learning and make meaningful connections to other subject areas. This IS:
- a drawing tutorial that includes the concepts of line, shape, space and 3D form (Math),
- makes links to historic and modern culture (Where We Are In Place & Time & How We Express Ourselves- IB).
- makes cross-curricular links to Seasons, Spring, Summer, Plants, Art History
This art project introduces students to the media and techniques of Painting. It uses easily available resources (pencils, paint sticks and acrylic paints) and lends itself to creative diversity.
Students get to express their unique ideas through personal choices and modifications, while working through the project. Pause the presentation in places to discuss next steps with students, check understanding and explore potential student responses or modifications, bringing personal creative ideas to the tutorial. This addresses the Viewing & Responding to artwork objectives in a purposeful way.
