DRAGON EYE with PLAY DOUGH Art Activity Visual Guide Skills Builder for CLAY
Quick art activity for Play Dough (Doh) sculpture of a Dragon Eye, to develop hand-building skills for clay. Students learn about slabs, spheres, coils and attaching while using this mess free product. A great introduction practise that is temporary and builds skills before engaging with the more permanent clay Dragon Eye lesson. This visual guide will also support your students at your independent Art centre. The perfect self-directed or early finisher project for older grades or a teacher guided project for younger grades and sub teachers.
Do you run exploratory or skill building art stations in your classroom or art room? Then you are always needing new ideas for independent activities that students will enjoy. I started creating self-directed Visual Guides for my students to use independently, for quick projects to work on, in the clay sculpture centre. Projects that build technical skills and media experience while allowing personal interpretation. These Visual Guides worked so well that I wanted to share them with you all.
When students can independently work at a choosing station, you can get on with supporting those students that need more help. Modelling Clay or Play Dough (Doh) is fabulous when you have time before a clay unit, allowing students to ideate in 3D, in a skill building lesson before starting their main clay project.
Use this with my Clay Dragon Eyes unit, as a skill builder / practise activity. Or when you have early finishers that need a mess free activity to go on with, while the rest of your class finishes the current class project. Use as a filler activity between projects or when timetables get messy. Also works well for an easy sub lesson.
Use as a Unit by combining with the following lessons, also available HERE, as suits your curriculum:
- DRAGON EYES CLAY sculpture art project for ceramics lesson 4th grade - Middle

This Visual Guide for a modelling clay based art activity of a DRAGON EYE, supports students to explore basic hand-building, composition and joining skills prior to the clay unit.

❤️ Take the stress out of prepping activities for art stations,
❤️ Avoid endless hours of research and resource creation
❤️ Avoid possible frustrations for students working on your guided art projects, that result from not having time to explore a media or technique, beforehand, and build that crucial prior knowledge and confidence with this medium.
❤️ Have available as an early finisher activity between projects
❤️ why should you trust my lessons?
I am both a general ed. classroom teacher and currently practising as a Visual Art and Digital Media specialist educator, teaching students from ages 4-12, at a primary school. I do this every day, just like you! I’ve done it all for you and tested these art station guides in my own art classroom.
❤️ How will this resource help busy teachers, who are nervous about teaching art?
No worries - I’ve got you covered.
This visual guide includes the materials list and teacher information, giving you the confidence to run the activity in your own classrooms.
⏰ How long should I run an art station for?
If you are an art teacher, then you can make that call based on your programme. For classroom teachers, I recommend that an art center stays open for at least a week, prior to starting a guided, whole class art project with that medium.
Then for another week after completing that project, so that early finishers can further experiment independently.
This Play Dough (Doh) dragon eye took students, in Grades 4-6, 1-2 class periods to complete independently. Try to include about 15min of independent research time for students look up visual exemplars for inspiration, on-line. Students worked independently using the thumbnail sheets for reference.
