DRAGON EYE model magic Art Activity Visual Guide for CLAY SKILLS Centre
Quick art activity for Model Magic sculpture of a Dragon Eye, to develop hand-building skills for clay. Students learn about slabs, spheres, coils and attaching while using this mess free product. A great alternative for teachers that don't have access to a kiln for clay. This visual guide will support your students at your sculpture centre. The perfect self-directed or early finisher project for older grades or a teacher guided project for younger grades and sub teachers.
Do you run exploratory art stations or fast finisher art centers (centres) in your classroom or art room? Then you are always needing new ideas for independent activities that students will enjoy. I started creating Visual Guides for my students to use independently, step-by-step for mini projects they work on at the clay station. Projects that build technical skills and media experience while allowing personal interpretation. These Visual Guides worked so well that I wanted to share them with you too.
When students can independently work at a choosing center (centre), you can get on with supporting those students that need more help. Model Magic is fabulous when you have early finishers that need a mess free activity to go on with, while the rest of your class finishes the current class project. Or use as a filler activity for those extra sessions between projects. Also works well for an easy sub lesson or a make up lesson for students who were absent when the clay projects were created by the class.
Created for my classroom and suitable for students in 3rd - 6th grades. Use with Mid Elementary as a teacher guided lesson or for Upper Elementary to Middle School students as a self-directed task. ⏰ How long should I run an art station for?
If you are an art teacher, then you can make that call based on your programme. For classroom teachers, I recommend that an art center stays open for at least a week, prior to starting a guided, whole class art project with that medium.
Then for another week after completing that project, so that early finishers can further experiment independently.

This Model Magic dragon eye took Grade 4-6 students a double class period to complete independently. This included about 15min of independent research time as students looked up visual exemplars for inspiration, on-line. Students were guided by the printed thumbnail sheets and worked independently.
